“I do not want art for a few, any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few”

Intent

The intent of our curriculum is to give all children exposure and access to art and artists – enabling them to appreciate the value of art; whether this be by making their own or appreciating and enjoying the art of others.

We want to give our children the opportunity to be inspired by famous artists of the past and present, to develop their own likes and dislikes and to begin develop their own individual style. Art shows children the possibilities of a creative and expressive future where an interest in making and appreciating art is part of an enriched and healthy lifestyle.

Art allows all children to participate equally and develop artistic creativity and individuality, so raising self-confidence and independence.  All children are encouraged to develop initiative, mastering new skills and processes, studying a range of styles and developing existing talents. The subject engages and inspires all children as well as equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art.

Our art curriculum contains appropriate subject knowledge and skills to explore and investigate, create and evaluate artwork as set out in the National Curriculum. It gives children a broad appreciation of artists’ work through an understanding and respect for their influences, lifestyles and values.
