Aiming High and Caring for Everyone.

Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Year 6 - Owls and Hawks

Happy New Year. Thank you so much for all the gifts we received at Christmas from you. You really made us feel spoilt and valued! We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed being able to spend time with your families. New Year is often time for reflection and for change. Whilst we reluctantly had to say good-bye to Miss Saxton at the end of term, we now welcome Miss Resch into the team. She is a very experienced and highly regarded teacher who will continue where Miss Saxton left off and do the very best for our children. I hope you give her a very warm welcome.

Uniform and PE

Our PE days are Monday and Tuesday; please ensure your child has their kit.

Whilst reflecting on last term, it was noticeable that not all children were wearing the correct school uniform. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing school clothes, (not sporting clothing) and that they are wearing a jade green jumper. Please see the school website for correct uniform. If you are struggling to purchase it, please contact the PFSA who may have some spare second-hand clothes or let us know.

Breakfast, snack and water:

Please encourage your child to eat breakfast before they come into school and provide them with a filling and healthy snack for break time. This will help them to concentrate and focus. Children also need a water bottle in school to keep hydrated throughout the day,

Homework

To help transition towards their journey to high school and to consolidate knowledge and skills needed for SATs, homework will change in year six this term. Each week your child will be asked to practise the key learning that has been taught.

Reading – practise the skill we have been focusing on in lessons or a comprehension

Read 3x a week for at least 30 minutes.

Maths – 10 arithmetic questions to build up speed and automaticity.

They will also have a few reasoning questions based on the weeks learning.

Spelling – 10 words to learn by heart for their spelling test on a Monday. These are possible spellings that could come up in the SATS test. I will continue to put work on ED SHED but please note it will only practice the letter pattern and might not be the 10 words. That doesn’t mean that they might not come up either!

Homework needs to be brought in by Friday as we will go through it together in class on a Friday. Children do not need to worry if they cannot do any of the questions as we will model this during the homework lesson on a Friday. However, we will ask them to do it on Friday breaktime if they have not attempted it or forgot it, so we have something to go through during the lesson. Again, this is good preparation for high school.

We will provide a homework club every lunchtime Tuesday - Thursday in Mrs Jacobs’ Room. Children can also practise their times tables on TTRS and their spellings if they choose to during this time.

SATs

It’s the time of year where we gently and slowly begin preparing for our SATs tests. These take place on the week beginning May 11th 2026. Please support your child in the build up towards these by reassuring them that no one can fail and that if they work hard to focus and concentrate this term, they will be super prepared. Some parents are not always aware that some high schools use them as a way for assessing year 9 options so it’s really important that the children are encouraged to do their best.

Thank you for your continued support. If you need to contact us please do so using our year 6 email.

Here’s to a very productive term.
