Year 4 - Woodpeckers and Nuthatches
We’ve had a lovely start back in Year 4 after the Christmas holiday and are all settled in ready for a new term. We have lots of exciting learning opportunities coming up this half term.
In English, we will be working on a writing a narrative. We have been practising our use of fronted adverbials and speech punctuation to enhance our stories. We are continuing to practise our spellings and handwriting every day as well.
In Mathematics, we have been developing our understanding of length and perimeter. We will also be starting to look at fractions including mixed numbers. We are continuing to work on quick recall of our multiplication facts up to 12x12. Being able to recall these facts quickly helps us in many other areas of our maths.
Our areas of learning for this half term are shown on the grid below.

Children should bring PE kit in a separate, named, P.E. bag to get changed into during the day. P.E. kit should be brought into school on a Monday and taken home again on a Friday. Please provide black shorts and a white T-shirt as well as joggers and a hoody or sweat-shirt for cold weather, as well as trainers. Please ensure that children’s P.E. kit is school appropriate (e.g. no crop tops, inappropriate slogans etc) and that earrings are taken out on P.E. days – if you are unable to take the earrings out, please provide tape for your child’s ears.
Please provide water in a bottle each day for your child to drink in the classroom. If your child has asthma, can you please ensure that they bring their inhaler into school so we can keep it in our class medical box.
For their homework, children should practise their reading (please aim for at least three times a week), practise their times tables and spellings. Reading books and logs should be in school every day and books will be changed on a Friday. Children will receive house points for reading three or more times a week at home.
Children can practise their spellings by logging onto ‘Ed Shed’ or ‘Spelling Shed’ and completing the assignments that have been set 3 times.
Please practise your child’s times tables as well at home. This can be done through ‘TTRockstars’.
Thank you for your help in supporting your child at school.
