Aiming High and Caring for Everyone.

Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Writing

Writing

At Christ Church St Peter’s Primary School, children from Foundation Stage to Year 6 are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum.  As writers, we intend for pupils to be able to plan, write and evaluate their writing. To be able to do this effectively, pupils follow a writing model of: imitation, innovation and independent application of skills; this gradually builds the independence of our children and supports our driver of initiative.   They will also develop an awareness of audience, purpose and context, and develop an increasingly large bank of vocabulary and grammar. We intend for pupils to leave school being able to use fluent, legible and speedy handwriting.  Our genres are progressive and are mapped out to ensure consistency and accuracy.

We have a clear progression of skills in writing.  Each year, teachers will introduce new sentence types to children that they will be encouraged to use in guided and independent tasks.

This scaffolding of the structure of writing is underpinned by direct teaching of punctuation and grammar and is rooted in a clear fidelity to our writing process.  There is a progression within language, sentences used and genres taught across the school enabling our children to meet end of year expectations in writing.

Handwriting

We teach cursive handwriting from EYFS and sessions are taught explicitly taught daily for 10 minutes.  As with all of our other teaching, handwiriting will be differentiated where necessary and appropriate.

In EYFS and KS1, children will practise their handwriting in the back of their literacy book or use other media.  From KS2, children will practise their handwriting in the back of their literacy book.

For those with fine motor difficulties, a variety of media will be used to move from gross to fine (e.g. large pens, chalks outside, paint bags, sand, foam…)  All children across school use a pencil to write with. Pens may be used for presentation pieces - please refer to presentation policy.
